Short Cycle: the Barnston Island Loop
Tucked quietly into the Fraser River between Surrey and Pitt Meadows, you could easily miss Barnston Island. Unless you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path. Accessible only by a short (and free!) ferry, the island feels like a peaceful world of its own. There are no shops, restaurants, or tourist attractions here—just farmland, some cows, a looping rural road, and river views.
It’s a popular spot for a gentle bike ride or walk along the mostly flat 10 km perimeter road. Especially in the warmer months when the fields are green, and the breeze carries that fresh, earthy smell of the river valley. Cranberry season (autumn) is also a great time to visit, as the fields are flooded and the ripe red berries float to the top.
Note: the road’s pavement is pretty beat up with many cracks and bumps. We were on our road bikes but wished we had our gravel bikes for the bigger, cushier tires.

On your ride/walk, you’ll pass small farms, see Mount Baker in the distance on a clear day, get unique views of the Golden Ears Bridge and maybe even catch sight of eagles overhead. It’s not about “doing” much—it’s about slowing down and enjoying a quiet corner of the Lower Mainland most people overlook.
If the tide is out, you can wander out on the mud flats at the eastern side of the island. However, do not swim in the Fraser River; currents are strong.

Ferry Details
The Barnston Island Ferry is small (more like a barge and tugboat), operated by the provincial government. It’s free, runs daily starting from early morning to late evening, mostly on demand, and takes just a few minutes to cross. Pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles (including small cars and farm vehicles) can use the ferry. There is parking nearby – walking or cycling is the most fun!
Ferry Location
Address for GPS: End of 104 Avenue, near Parsons Channel, Surrey, BC

Nearby
Along the same road as the ferry access is Surrey Bend Regional Park. Known for its wetlands, floodplain forests, and quiet trails, the park offers a refreshing contrast to the surrounding urban landscape. It’s an excellent spot for walking, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing—especially in the early morning or late afternoon. There are 5 km worth of bike paths and 7 km of walking trails, along with picnic facilities, bathrooms and water. This is a great addition to your Barnston adventure.
