5 Stunning Viewpoints in Porto You Won’t Want to Miss

Porto may be Portugal’s second-largest city, but it’s second to none when it comes to charm and atmosphere. Nestled along the Douro River, Porto climbs from the colourful waterfront up into layers of terracotta rooftops and narrow cobblestone lanes. It’s a city best seen from many angles—and luckily, there’s no shortage of scenic viewpoints to soak it all in.

Here are five of my favourite miradouros (viewpoints) in Porto that will leave you absolutely smitten with the city:

1. Clérigos Tower (Torre dos Clérigos)

Ready for a climb? Conquer the 225 steps to the top of the 76-meter-tall Clérigos Tower, and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic viewpoints over Porto, the Douro River, and across to Vila Nova de Gaia. It used to be the tallest structure in Porto, and though it no longer holds that title, the views are still some of the best in the city—especially around sunset, when the rooftops glow golden.

Open until 11 PM, perfect for evening views.

Entry to the tower costs €6 (includes museum); the church is free to enter.

Tip: Take time to explore the adjoining museum and the church—it’s beautiful inside!

2. Porto Cathedral Bell Tower (Sé do Porto)

This one’s a two-for-one. Porto’s Cathedral is already a must-visit for its historical significance and beautiful cloisters—but don’t skip the bell tower. Climb to the top for sweeping 360° views that showcase the city’s many levels and rooftops, with Clérigos Tower visible in the distance.

Entrance to the cathedral is free; it’s €3 to access the cloister and bell tower.

Tip: Time your visit for late afternoon when the light starts to soften over the city.

3. Dom Luís I Bridge

An icon of Porto—and one of the best ways to get your bearings. This double-decker bridge spans the Douro River, connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. The upper deck is shared by the metro and pedestrians, and offers incredible views in both directions: the colourful Ribeira neighbourhood, boats drifting on the river, and the steep hills rising on either side.

For a different vibe, try walking the lower deck—closer to the water and the wine cellars of Gaia.

Bonus trivia: The bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel’s protégé, so don’t be surprised if it feels a little Parisian!

4. Crystal Palace Gardens (Jardins do Palácio de Cristal)

A peaceful break from the bustle of the city, these Romantic-era gardens offer not only beautifully landscaped paths, fountains, and peacocks—but also an incredible viewpoint. From the right spots, you’ll be able to see the Douro River winding into the Atlantic, framed by Porto’s rooftops and bridges.

Free! This is the kind of place to take your time—pack a snack or coffee and enjoy the serenity. A short walk (or quick ride) from the city centre.

5. Vila Nova de Gaia Cable Car (Teleférico de Gaia)

If you’ve crossed the Dom Luís Bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia, don’t rush straight to the wine cellars (okay, maybe just a quick taste!). Instead, take the cable car down to the waterfront. The ride is short but offers an amazing bird’s-eye view of Porto’s Ribeira and the river below.

Single ticket: €6 | Round-trip: €9 | Family and combo discounts available.

Open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM (closed on select holidays).

It’s the perfect way to wrap up your day before strolling the riverfront or settling in for a port tasting.

Final Thoughts

From towers to bridges to cable cars, Porto offers no shortage of beautiful perspectives—each one helping you see this city in a slightly different (and always magical) way. If you can, visit a few at different times of day for totally different moods and views!

Let me know which Porto viewpoints are your favourite—or if you discover a new miradouro I should add to the list!
